Handheld GPS -

A handheld GPS does some of the same things as a global positioning system that may be already installed in your vehicle. Simply put, a handheld GPS is a device that tells you where in the world you are. Maps of roads or waterways or even parks can be downloaded into a handheld GPS, so that if you go hiking or boating you will always know where you are and how you can get to another location. A handheld GPS acts as a navigator that will keep you from getting lost, or will help you locate yourself if you find yourself in unfamiliar surroundings.

Because a handheld GPS is not wired into a vehicle, it cannot perform such functions as opening your car door or turning on your lights in order to help you find your car in a parking lot. Also, a handheld GPS is not tied in with a telephone system, so you cannot talk to a person at the other end of a telephone line. Unlike a regular GPS, that can intuit whether you have been in an accident and need help, and then alert the proper authorities, a handheld GPS will lie helplessly on the ground or in your pocket if you get incapacitated in an accident. The bears will find you long before the police will, if a handheld GPS is your only protection.
